I can see fine. Why do I need an eye exam?

Even if your vision seems perfect and you have 20/20 vision with or without glasses, regular eye exams are very important in assessing, maintaining, and protecting your eye health.  This is especially important when considering that many eye diseases are asymptomatic in their early stages.  While in the past “sight testing” simply assessed visual acuity while disregarding eye health, modern comprehensive eye exams take an in depth look at eye and overall health with refractive correction being a relatively minor part of the exam.  This allows for early diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic eye disease – some of which have little to no visual impact in their early stages. Glaucoma, which effects 20% of the population, is completely asymptomatic until significant nerve damage has taken place and with today’s technology can be detected at much earlier stages than ever before.  Routine eye examinations are of critical importance in safeguarding your vision throughout life.
