When should my child get their first eye exam?

Your child’s first eye exam should be scheduled at 6 months of age.  At this visit, extra-ocular muscle movement , retinal reflex, amblyopia (lazy eye), approximate refractive error, and ocular health are all assessed by the optometrist.  Some tips for your little ones visit include making sure your child is well rested and fed before the scheduled appointment time and bringing a favourite toy or video/song on your phone to the visit.  Children should continue to receive annual eye exams between ages 1-18 to ensure their eyes are developing correctly and their visual acuity and eye health are optimal.  Children’s eye exams are covered by MSP until age 19.
